2010 Top Women in Wireless

Tools

2010 Top Women in WirelessWelcome to the 2010 FierceWireless Top Women in Wireless list. This is the third annual edition of this popular feature in which Fierce editors track the female stars in the wireless industry (click here for 2009 and here for 2008).

In the traditionally male-dominated world of telecom, it's not always easy to find women in top-ranking positions. But thanks to input from our readers, Fierce editors have compiled a list that we believe encompasses some of the best and brightest female executives in the business.

These women have been selected for their accomplishments, their technical savvy, their leadership and, perhaps most importantly, their influence on the industry. These are the women that you often see speaking at industry events, working on various committees or negotiating tough deals.

Every year we select new women in the wireless industry to honor, so please check out the 2008 and 2009 list to see our past honorees.

And if there's a woman in the wireless industry that you think deserves recognition, please use the comments section to tell us why. --Sue

Wondering how this list is compiled. Judging by the comment "it's not always easy to find women in top-ranking positions", probably choosing whomever happened to be a female and a wireless exec. Case in point, Padmasree Warrior, who was the CTO at MOT, was part of the exec team leading to its decline. She is infamous at MOT for predicting via an internal email that the iPhone was irrelavent and did not present anything new technologically so would be a flop, proving to many at MOT at that time just how clueless our senior leadership was.

Did Fierce take this into account?

Kris Rinne, SVP of Architecture and Planning at AT&T deserves to be listed. She is in charge of planning AT&T's roll out of LTE and overall mobile broadband strategy.

Clay, Kris was in our 2008 list of top women in wireless.

In addition, the comment that it's not always easy to find women in top-ranking positions doesn't mean we chose whomever happened to be a female. It's referring to the fact that this is still a male-dominated industry. However, since we have been compiling this list for a few years now, it's very encouraging to see more and more women serving in top leadership. I believe it is very impressive to see Padmasree Warrior in a top technology position. Very few women hold those positions. And, if you remember, many, many people predicted that the iPhone would be irrelevant.--Lynnette

Hello, you need to check out Natasha Royer Coons from Tera Nova www.teranovaglobal.com

She's a former Sprint Manager that ventured out to start her own company which has been the leader in Kiosk WAN and mobility solutions. Her company has deployed thousands of mobile devices and provides solutions to some of the worlds most respected companies.

Thanks for recognizing top women in this industry. Selina Lo, CEO of Ruckus Wireless, definitely deserves to be here too. I realize she was included last year - does that mean she can't be listed again?

We strive to recognize new women every year. --Sue

A couple of women in wireless that I think deserve recognition and attention:

- Venetia Espinoza (T-Mobile). Venetia understood the important of building strong wireless developer communities back when she was at Nextel. She built the first significant developer community that is now mimicked by Qualcomm and others in the market. Venetia brought this experience and understanding to T-Mobile where she is helping T-Mobile innovate their approach to development support and data applications.

- Stephanie Bauer (Verizon). Stephanie has long understood the importance of wireless operators maintaining their relationship with their subscribers. Stephanie has helped lead the industry in adopting policies & standards which help improve the overall customer experience while protecting each individual's privacy. As Associate Director, Mobile Marketing & Advertising at Verizon Wireless, she launched some of the first mobile advertising programs in the US.

Take a look at Barbara Nelson, CTO, iPass. She has been CTO for 3 years and during that time, helped iPass become an active participant in WiMAX, become the largest worldwide wireless footprint, re-architect the software to a SaaS platform and establish partnerships with Qualcomm and Sierra Wireless among others. She was also a representative/editor for the Trusted Network Connect (part of Trusted Network Group). And, she's a great collaborator and team builder.

There's more. Barbara Nelson helped bring back Wi-Fi. She's chaired the X.400 Special Interest Group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, represents iPass on standards committees such as the WiMAX Forum and the Wireless Broadband Alliance, and holds multiple patents, including configuration of a client access device.

You forgot Christy Wyatt, Sr. Vice President from Motorola. Quite the force!
