5. Dan Hesse, President & CEO, Sprint Nextel

Tools

What makes him powerful: Sprint appointed Embarq executive Dan Hesse as its new president and CEO in December of last year. Hesse replaced former Sprint CEO Gary Forsee, who stepped down from the helm in October amid criticism for his performance and the escalating problems at Sprint.

Although Hesse's most recent job had been heading up wireline operator Embarq, he was no stranger to the wireless industry. He spent 23 years at AT&T, including serving as president and CEO of AT&T Wireless Services from 1997 to 2000.

During that time, he is credited for convincing senior AT&T management to support AT&T Wireless' Digital One Rate plan. This plan was the first in the wireless industry to bundle roaming and long distance fees into a flat-rate airtime package for consumers. Digital One Rate was a huge marketing success. Other nationwide operators copied the Digital One Rate plan, which caused demand for wireless services to skyrocket.

Hesse has certainly had his hands full trying to turn Sprint around. The operator has struggled with its 2005 merger with Nextel and has been losing iDEN customers at an alarming rate. It also has been under fire for what some consider a risky (and costly) move--deploying a nationwide mobile WiMAX network in its 2.5 GHz spectrum.

Shortly after his appointment, Hesse made some big changes at Sprint. He eliminated 4,000 jobs, reduced the number of distribution points, including 125 company-owned stores and consolidating Sprint's headquarters to Overland Park, Kan.

Under Hesse's leadership, Sprint also introduced an unlimited rate plan called "Simply Everything" which provides unlimited voice, data, text, email, Web-surfing, Sprint TV, Sprint Music, GPS Navigation, Direct Connect and Group Connect for $99.99 a month.

Hesse also became the "face" of Sprint by becoming a pitchman for the company. He's been in two advertisements so far. In the most recent one, he explains how customers can have their phones configured for them at Sprint retail stores.

But Hesse's most powerful move to date may be the crafting of a complicated deal that will combine Sprint and Clearwire's WiMAX businesses and create a new company that will include a $3.2 billion investment from Intel, Google, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks and Trilogy Equity Partners. This deal is supposed to close by year-end.

When Hesse was named the new CEO of Sprint, not everyone thought he was the best man for the job. But if he can pull off a turnaround at Sprint, I suspect his critics will be silenced and he will once again be making wireless history.

It was a good list. May be you forgot Arun Sarin former C.E.O Vodafone Group.

What can Wireless industry do to help with the solution of the financial crisis? Any views please!

I think it is sad that Sprint is getting so much bad press, it really is a good company. The separation package offered to employees is excellent. Too bad that kind of stuff is not covered by the news.

the separation package was one of our top five stories today.

Dear Sir
Started with 3 Katana II service couldn't repair one replaced in store with a katanna LX While using this another katana II come apart and couldn't repair it either (another in store exchange) while having sending problems with the first katana LX the second was something else - the in ring doesn't work all the time. Now I have had the 0600 phone replaced 3 times total 4 phones with the same problem. The one katana LX no "in ring" still don't ring all the time. So after all complaining and even trying to deal with the insurance company - (Of which should never had have had to be any kind of solution for a phone that didn't work) - So I complained and october 08 your company was to send me a Motorola VE20 never received and reason to call and complain again for the 0600 phone. Then they send me to the ins company they send me 2 samsung Z400's and as soon as I see them I said OH NO the window is so small I probably can't see the date from the outside. (being in business myself I am constantly looking to the date and time.) In and out of doc's and different states on a time schedule. Well now here's my problem I have a Samsung Z400 and a Sanyo katana LX and a Razor katana II all having to have different batteries and mobile chargers.

With each phone I pay for a service and it's a group plan - any plan you sell should be free from incidence, mine are not. The best phones don't seem to last long and the specials you introduce there are no parts for repair. I for one don't like having 3 different phones and while I am thinking of another phone I'm not thinking Sprint. I certainly don't need someone taking my money every month and when I have trouble having to replace my TX with yet another brand of SOMETHING ELSE. Then I'll have 4 different chargers and the only thing I don't see changing are the phone numbers.

Totally upset with all the different equipment I have been given to complete my service.

All your Tech's and support apologies cannot and do not make up for the greasy way you break up a family of phones.

Sincerely, Clyde Brown

Lowell McAdam, President & CEO, Verizon Wireless
I saw my kids with their cell phones call and talk to others all over the world with no wires.
QUESTION; Why can't you phone manufacture a regular sized house phone for me at my house with regular sized numbers and a regular sized phone I can hold up to my ear. While you are at it make it so I could put another extension that would work in four different rooms like I have now and I do not have to carry around. NO WIRES NEEDED AND STANDARD PHONE SIZE.

Dan hasn't been that great for Sprint. He basically steals from his indirect dealers has them help promote a new phone coming to market and the restricts their access to ordering that phone driving business to Best Buy, Corp. Stores, Sprint 800, Radio Shacks. Leaving the small business owner with a huge loss of business. While the whole time they have change our contracts so are sales are the same as a corp. store but we do not have immediate access to all of the new phones. Not only has he restrict access to phones in an attempt to keep the dealers quiet he gave us an exclusive on the Sanyo S1, a phone with no camera or the ability to process data. The company is focusing on their data sales, so why would an indirect have an exclusive on a phone that we can’t sell data. Dan has cut commissions to his indirect dealers raised their quotas and restricted access to phones. It is unfortunate that Dan under values his indirect dealers because we are the ones that have a huge financial stake in the company we want to see Sprint succeed.

Well my issue is between Sprint Customer service and the insurance company I filed my claim on a phone that I had dropped on March 30th 2009 and as of today April 8th I still have no phone so the main concern is with the insurance company and I found out last night after 8 long days with out my phone hearing "YOU WILL RECEIVE YOUR PHONE TOMORROW" I find out that they had to order my color of my cell phone and that I would hafta wait another 3 days for my phone to arrive OH MY GOD I am just tired if dealing with incompetence I told them I don't care if I receive a shit brown phone I just want my phone and I want it now. Well it seems that I finally got someone who will not drop the ball and my phone should be in my hands today whether it will or not is completely up in the air pray for me please

Inept corporate leadership!!!

I own a Sprint branded store. For the last 10 months all the buzz has been about the upcoming release of the Palm Pre to rival the iPhone. Now I cannot order it for my customers much less be able to have it in stock. Since I cannot sell this device, first I will try to show a different model...if customer is intent on getting the Pre, then I think I'm going to recommend the iPhone since I'm losing that customer anyway...and won't have to deal with their customer service issues.

Evidently Sprint is attempting to kill all independent dealers while we were the ones on the front lines handling issues created by the big box stores and telemarketers.

Amen brother!! Either they are attempting to shut down the indirect channel, or absolutely incompetent distribution and pricing.

Dan hesse,
You have hurt business badly for the indirect dealers. Were the ones that actually care and try our best to sell and push your products. And when when they hire someone that put the time and effort to train them. Most of them have great customers they see daily because they always go back to that certain store because of the quality of help they recieve. I think you have done wrong by the indirect dealers. You have done nothing more then forgot about the small business of the indirect dealers the ones that push your company. And dealer stores keep closing because they cant afford to stay open not because there not doing sells but what you have done with commission. You give the new arrivals to best buy and raido shack WHY??? there not only promoting you there promoting every other company out there. indirect dealers are the ones that deserve that quality and time and money that you give to everyone else!!! YOU HAVE DONE THEM WRONG !
