Why it's Fierce: Armed with $40 million in venture capital money and headed by industry veteran Michael Gallagher--former CEO of FiberTower and Flarion, which was subsequently acquired by Qualcomm-- SpiderCloud offers a solid solution to deal with the capacity crunch and coverage problems for operators' most prized customers: the enterprise.
SpiderCloud developed a wireless platform that enables operators to deploy and manage customized 3G, 4G and WiFi networks. The company coins the platform as an enterprise radio access network (E-RAN), and promises a quantum leap in performance and cost reductions compared with existing wireless solutions, such as distributed antenna systems.
The logic behind the solution is that it will give operators the ability to provide coverage and capacity within local, defined areas in buildings and other structures to reduce the load on their macro networks. Rather than deploying access points off the macro network, the E-RAN serves as a campus network that consists of access points set up in the most needed areas.
The system is what SpiderCloud calls zero touch installation because of its self-organizing capabilities. The company also touts its low-cost routing options for voice and data to mobile radio access networks.
What's next: European operators are in the midst of testing the concept and SpiderCloud hopes to ink some operator deployment deals soon.
