AT&T to offer Garmin phone for $500? - Rumor Mill Roundup

Verdict: WRONG

Why it went wrong: A report on the blog Engadget stated definitively that AT&T Mobility and the personal navigation company Garmin were going to launch a GPS-centric Nuvifone in the third quarter of 2008. The price point provided was $500, plus a two-year contract and $19.99-a-month unlimited data and GPS plan. The blog had cited a survey which attempted to get a read on how interested consumers would be in the phone if it was offered for $500. There was no definitive rollout plan cited, and the product never went anywhere. In fact, at the end of July, Garmin announced that it was delaying the phone, pushing it to 2009. Perhaps the delay was due to a perceived lack of demand, since most carriers offer GPS services already.
