With 700,000 apps, Google now in dead heat with Apple

With the addition of 25,000 Android applications to its Play storefront during the past month, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) now counts roughly the same number of smartphone applications--700,000--as rival Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL). The news is notable considering the heated rivalry between the two companies, recently highlighted by Apple's decision to dump Google's mapping service for its own Apple Maps product. But while Google Play now offers about the same number of applications as Apple's App Store, developers continue to make more money from Apple's app storefront than Google's: According to Flurry, for every $1 generated by Apple's App Store, Google Play generates just 23 cents.
