ABI: Qualcomm leads in 4G patent race

In the race to secure patents on 4G wireless technologies--including those for LTE and WiMAX--Qualcomm has emerged as the clear winner so far, according to ABI Research. Qualcomm holds 24 percent of all of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute patent declarations related to LTE, according to ABI. Additionally, Qualcomm has 16 percent of the 26,000 patents related to 4G technologies generally, including WiMAX. In terms of LTE patents, Qualcomm leads all of its potential patent rivals, including Interdigital (18 percent), Huawei (10 percent), LG (9 percent), Nokia (9 percent) and Samsung (7 percent).
