Alca-Lu names Verwaayen CEO

It took Alcatel-Lucent just two months to secure a new leadership team. The company today announced that former British Telecom executive Ben Verwaayen will replace Patricia Russo as CEO of the firm and French businessman Philippe Camus, a former chief executive with European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company, will replace Serge Tchuruk as chairman.  Both Tchuruk and Russo resigned July 29 amid criticism about their performance.

Verwaayen, who once was the vice chairman of the management board at Lucent in the United States, has familiarity with Alcatel-Lucent and its problems. The infrastructure vendor has lost market share amid tough competition from rivals such as Ericsson.

Verwaayen and Camus will start their new posts Oct. 1.
