Amazon selling G1 Android phone for under $100

Tools

Amazon.com is selling the T-Mobile G1 for less than $100, adding further steam to the movement to push down the price of popular smartphones.

The online retailer is selling the first phone running on Google's Android platform for $98, a little more than half of the phone's price when bought with a two-year T-Mobile USA service contract. However, in the Amazon deal, customers have to be purchasing the phone with a new T-Mobile contract, so existing customers of the carrier will be missing out.

The move is the latest in a series to drop the price of popular smartphones like the G1 and Apple's iPhone 3G. Wal-Mart began selling the G1 for $149 beginning in October. Around the New Year, both AT&T Mobility and Best Buy began offering refurbished versions of the iPhone at $50 discounts on the original pricing.
