Analyst: Apple's iPhone outpaces competition at AT&T, Verizon and Sprint
The iPhone gets prominent placement on Sprint's homepage.
"Our March checks indicated the iPhone continues to extend its market share gains," Walkley wrote in a research note Monday. "In fact, we believe iPhones are outselling all other smartphones combined at Sprint and AT&T and selling at roughly equal volume to all Android smartphones at Verizon (NYSE:VZ)."
All three carriers offer strong competition from Android smartphones, and Walkley noted that the Samsung Galaxy S II is selling well at AT&T and Sprint while the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the first phone running Android 4.0, or Ice Cream Sandwich, is doing well at Verizon. Still, the iPhone appears to be maintaining its place as the premier device at all of the carriers. Apple sold 37 million iPhones worldwide in the fourth quarter as it claimed the global smartphone crown.
Still, while iPhone sales were exceptionally strong at all three carriers, according to Walkley, they were less so at Verizon. "We believe cumulative Android smartphones may have represented over 50 percent of total smartphone sales at Verizon for the first time since the iPhone 4S launch," he wrote. "In fact, our checks indicated sales of the iPhone 4S at Verizon were not as strong in terms of total smartphone share at AT&T and Sprint."
As GigaOM notes, this may be because Verizon has been heavily pushing its LTE smartphones and enticing customers the past two quarters with a promotion that doubles their data allotments when they sign up for an LTE smartphone. Currently, all of Verizon's LTE smartphones run Android.
Regardless, it appears that both Apple and Samsung will continue to win the lion's share of handset profits. "Our global checks also indicated another quarter of strong market share gains for Samsung, particularly in Europe and Asia," Walkley wrote. "In fact, we believe Samsung's strong smartphone portfolio across all price tiers will result in Samsung's smartphone shipments increasing a remarkable 15 percent-plus sequentially during the seasonally weak March quarter."
