Analyst: China's 3G still years away
Despite the country's promise to roll out its TD-SCDMA 3G standard before the Olympics, one analyst contends that based on the average trial periods of new wireless networking technologies, the likelihood of TD-SCDMA launching before the Olympics is very unlikely. In fact, the technology could take a few more years to launch. The Ernst & Young analyst also predicted that China might end up awarding licenses for WCDMA and CDMA2000 by the time TD-SCDMA rolls out.

My opinion is that TDSCDMA will be used during the Beijing Olympics and I have stated this since 2007 in many presentations. China, however, has already moved ahead to also test 4G wireless technology based on domestic IP creation. They even have a competitor to Mobile WiMax right now(McWILL). The real key will be if the Government wants to push these Chinese-created 3G, 4G wireless protocols outside China? Currently, China's two major technolgoy manufacturers Huawei and ZTE are pushing Western 3G technologies outside of China but inside its a different story. One could argue that China has two strategies, protect their domestic markets by working with domestic manufacturers on Chinese government supported protocols., and secondly producing Western standard licensed 3G wireless technologies to sell for export markets into Western markets. All the while, it will be important to watch this year if China Mobile (which just announced establishment of an office in London) will expand into global markets (Like Vodafone).
