Are design flaws plaguing the iPhone 3G?
There have been a flurry of news reports recently about the iPhone 3G and its purported issues with 3G data connectivity. Specifically, people are unhappy with how slowly the iPhone downloads data over AT&T's wireless network. Some say the phone frequently switches from the faster UMTS/HSDPA network to the EDGE network without warning or drops the data signal entirely.
It's not clear why the data connectivity problems are occurring (if, in fact, they are). Some blame the chip set, other's blame AT&T's network. One well-regarded technical magazine, Sweden's Ny Teknik, says that tests conducted on the 3G iPhone show that its sensitivity to 3G network signals is below the level specified by the 3G standard. In other words, the adjustment between the amplifier and the antenna is defective and that's causing the amplifier in the phone to capture very weak signals from the antenna and that leads to poor 3G connectivity.
AT&T and Apple have both denied any problems with the phone. But that hasn't stopped the word from spreading--thanks, in part, to AT&T competitors (read: Verizon) that would like nothing more than the iPhone 3G to fail in the market. I suspect the negative press may soon have an impact on iPhone 3G sales, particularly if the connectivity issues persist without any explanation or remedy. If there really is a problem with the iPhone 3G and data connectivity, AT&T and Apple need to step up and address the problem before this turns into a customer relations disaster. --Sue

Yes Att and Apple needs to address this problem.... When I was with Verizon I never had a drop call... but this doesn't mean that others with Verizon hasn't had dropped calls as I know of some that have had them....
But I think with Apple's greediness and not working with Verizon that was a bad choice by Apple.... I feel the IPhone would have been the best phone in the world if it had been on Verizon's network period.... what a shame that it is not....
We can only hope that when the contract runs out with Apple and Att that Apple does whatever they have to do to get these phones on the right networks....
If Apple wanted to tie this thing down like they are trying to... what they should have did was built their own network for their own phone instead of relying on one of the others is the way I feel about it... maybe things would have worked out better for all of us?
And the best thing they could have did was to let us go with whatever carrier we wanted to... the hacked phones have been with T-Moblie.... some like it some don't.... and from what I have heard is they aren't the best either....
I think the hackers wanted to show Apple they could do what they wanted to with their phones and also pick the carrier they wanted...
As far as the iPhone 3G.... they say there is no hacks so people can go to another carrier... well how and behold there isn't no hacks.... there is sim cards now! (Rebel Simcard)
Apple and Att only have to themselves for this mess with hackers trying to go with another carrier.... what they need to do is put their heads together and fix this problem.... what they did was false advertised their products is what they did... with all the money they are making on the iPhone why don't they fix their connection problems?
Twice as fast for half the price... where is twice as fast and where is half the price? I think this slogan came from Att's end.... its supposed to be twice as fast? We are connected to Att where's the speed Att? Half the price? Again Att set the prices....
My phone works great when I use it on my network.... and it is capable of running at faster speeds..... and wifi as well... so I am going to blame this on Att....... And we all know that Apple knows of this problem as well as Att knows it... it just now Apple has to suffer the embarrassment of Att crap! I bet you if Apple had to do this all over again they would not choose Att.....
I am not saying that I don't love my iPhone but if there is a hack or anything to get this phone on Verizon's network I would jump right on it and pay my way out of my Att contract....
With the case of the 3G burning a person so far, cracks in the cases, problems with the itune store, problems with the apps and connection problems Apple and Att better watch out as I smell a lawsuit as well.... and a huge batch of recalls!
Yes, it's true that the phone switches with no warning from 3G to Edge, even when you're standing still in one place. Last night, I watched mine go from 3G to Edge to no signal, then back to 3G in my house, all within about a minute.
"In other words, the adjustment between the amplifier and the antenna is defective and that's causing the amplifier in the phone to capture very weak signals from the antenna and that leads to poor 3G connectivity." I think you wanted to say "In other words, the connection between the antenna and amplifier is defective and that's causing the amplifier to not capture weak signals and that leads to poor 3G connectivity"
toothfairy, Lotta emotion & not much on fact in your rant. Greediness is not why AAPL did not cut a deal with VZW.
First, it takes the longest time, requires the most testing, to get a phone approved to operate over VZW's network . . . regardless of the phone manufacturer. Check the history on this, & you'll see this is fact.
Second, in contrast to VZW, AT&T was "desperate" to jump start is falling growth in subscribers. It was more willing to "give away the farm" to AAPL more so than any other carrier, but in return, it sought an exclusive contract with AAPL. I'm sure AAPL, if it were truly "greedy," it would not have accepted the exclusive arrangement that it did. In short, there clearly was bargaining, & the parties cut the best deal they could for themselves. But I wouldn't call it greed.
As a former VZW customer, I'm sure you were aware of the "shortcomings" of AT&T's network v. VZW's network, yet you made the decision to go with an iPhone with AT&T. I'm a long time VZW customer. In contrast, I would never switch carriers just to get a particular phone.
It remains to be seen how long AT&T's exclusivity with AAPL will last notwithstanding the terms of the contract. I have to think that if AT&T fails to perform its side of the bargain, AAPL will opt out of the contract. Alternatively, AAPL & AT&T may renegotiate the deal to eliminate the exclusivity. Perhaps with the $$$ AAPL is making it could buy its way of the exclusivity provision.
Sprint's 3G network is solid. It would be super cool if Apple would unlock their phone so that a better carrier could support it. Plus Sprint's plans are the best value for your money...$99 Unlimited Plan...you can't beat it! All these iPhone people are totally getting ripped off.
absolutely true. my 3g drops over the same spot every day to and from work......my old iphone didn't. the only difference now is this 2 mile stretch of 3g connectivity that my phone fails to connect to daily...if i stay immobile long enough, eventually it connects.
I have the same problem on the ATT network with an LG Shine. I called tech support on a land line. They denied that it was happening and claimed that it was because I was indoors. So I walked outdoors with the LG Shine where I could see the tower. The phone switched from 3G to Edge to no signal then the signal returned. Tech support immediately said that it was my SIM chip.
So, either the LG Shine has the same problem or it is the electronics in the network.
I still have my 2G iPhone because I felt like it was a little too soon for Apple to be dropping 3G, when it was clear that the glitches from 2G had yet to be worked out.
I was even more reluctant to pick up the 3G when all those issues with activating the phone occurred on the release date. It was, for me, a portend of things to come. And viola! Here were are with yet another issue.
Apple may get this problem corrected, but I have to agree that it's gonna take a bruising if the legitimate concerns of the users are not addressed.
In its defense, when we raised an uproar about the ridiculous price of the iPhone, it was eventually dropped to more reasonable levels. Perhaps, the grumbling about the shoddy 3G connections will, once again, get Apple to shape up.
I own an iPhone 3G and have experienced the following problems:
1. Data connections drop even though signal shows five bars. I regularly need to cycle power to regain a data connection.
2. Phone periodically says "No Service" in very strong coverage areas for both EDGE and UMTS. Sometimes a power cycle is required to reconnect to the AT&T network.
3. Lately, I've also started noticing that the GPS and maps get confused, either by putting my location in the wrong place or giving me search results that sometimes can be in another country, even when I'm blocks away from a business and have spelled its name perfectly in the search bar.
4. Ironically, the handoff between UMTS and EDGE is flawless for voice calls, better than any phone I've owned. The iPhone 3G is able to hold onto calls in elevators, etc., without dropping.
5. Alas, placing calls while on 3G is another story. Sometimes I'll have to place the same call up to 4 times to get it to connect.
Look around in various support forums on the Web and you'll see that my experiences are not unique.
IPhone is GSM/UMTS it don't work on Sprint
Do you seriously think that Apple would work with a technology that is not a world standard?
This is becoming a very ANNOYING problem.
It happens to my dad's and my Iphone. It happens so often I just use my wifi connection.
The connection cuts outs so frequently, and when im connected I get extremly slow data downloads. I live quite close to the network tower as well. Believe it or not this is on Telstra! I hope this problem is fixed or im seriously considering getting a HTC Touch Diamond or Pro.
