ARM, TI, Samsung team to take on Intel

Chipmaker ARM and six other vendors are teaming up to create a standard layer of software that will make it easier to make phones with iPhone-like functionality, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The aim is to make use of ARM Holdings' chip technology and fend off competition from Intel. Chip makers Texas Instruments, Samsung Electronics and Marvell Technology are all participating in the effort. The group plans to combine the Linux operating system with other software to create a platform for mobile phones.

"I never underestimate Intel as a competitor," ARM CEO Warren East said. "But they have a lot of catching up to do."
