AT&T announces buy-one, get-one-free offer on iPhone 6s, Galaxy S6 and other phones

AT&T (NYSE: T) joined the holiday promotions frenzy, introducing a two-for-one deal for the iPhone 6s, Samsung Galaxy S6 and other smartphones. The offer is available to new and existing customers when both phones are purchased through AT&T Next, the carrier's installment plan.

The first phone can be a new line or an upgrade, and the second must be a new line. The offer isn't quite as straightforward as it may seem, however: Customers add both lines to a qualified plan and can pay as little as $70 a month for two phones through the Next program. Starting in as many as three billing cycles, AT&T discounts monthly payments of the "free" phone to the tune of $21.67 a month for 30 months, essentially reimbursing the user for the cost of the phone over two and a half years.

Customers pay taxes on both phones at the time of the sale. The promotion runs through December.

AT&T's announcement is just the latest in a flurry of activity by carriers to lure customers during the ultra-competitive holiday season. T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) is taking direct aim at specific carriers with various customized promotions; Verizon (NYSE: VZ) is offering bonus monthly data allotments to new and existing users who add a line or upgrade handsets; and Sprint (NYSE: S) last month began offering to cut the rate plans in half for users who switch from other tier-one carriers.
