AT&T bolsters LTE coverage in Texas with Peoples Wireless' 700 MHz spectrum
The FCC approved AT&T's purchase of two 700 MHz licenses from Peoples Wireless in Texas. AT&T said the action would allow the carrier to deploy 10x10 MHz LTE carrier aggregation in the state to improve its coverage and its network performance.
AT&T didn't disclose the value of the transaction, and it's likely relatively minor compared with the roughly $18 billion AT&T spent in last year's AWS-3 spectrum auction. Nonetheless, these kinds of spectrum purchases in the so-called "secondary spectrum market" are relatively common among the nation's top carriers, and generally allow them to plug holes in their coverage and improve their coverage and network performance.
