AT&T brings 'Rollover Data' to some of its GoPhone prepaid customers

AT&T Mobility (NYSE: T) is letting some of its GoPhone prepaid customers access the carrier's "Rollover Data" program. AT&T started offering rollover data to its customers on its Mobile Share Value shared data plans in late January.

Starting on May 15, AT&T GoPhone customers who sign up for the carrier's $60 and $45 monthly plans will be eligible to roll over their monthly unused data for 30 days, as long as they renew their plan on time. Existing customers will be eligible for rollover data on their next renewal after May 15. Customers must own a smartphone in order to take advantage of the offer.

As an example, AT&T said a GoPhone customer on a $60 plan who uses only 2.5 GB of the 4 GB in their plan and then re-enrolls in that plan a month later will have 4 GB of data plus 1.5 GB of rollover data to use for the next 30 days.

Other carriers have brought rollover data programs to prepaid customers. T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS) brought its rollover data program, which it calls "Data Stash," to its Simple Choice prepaid customers in late March. The offering had only been available to T-Mobile's Simple Choice postpaid customers up until then.

T-Mobile's Data Stash is available to customers who purchase at least 3 GB of LTE data for smartphones or at least 1 GB for tablets per month. Additionally, T-Mobile gives every customer with Data Stash 10 GB of LTE data for free. T-Mobile has said that customers' data won't start carrying over until after the free 10 GB runs out. The free 10 GB is available until Dec. 31, 2015. T-Mobile said customers will lose their unused data after one year from when it is deposited into their Data Stash.

Interestingly, early last year prepaid MVNO TracFone Wireless announced its "Unlimited Carryover" offer, which the carrier said allows customers to keep any unused minutes, texts and data as long as their service is active.
