AT&T looks beyond app store battles with HTML5

Tools

AT&T Mark CollinsAT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) is working to foster the development of applications built on HTML5 technology, a move that essentially sidesteps the app store battle among Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM), Nokia (NYSE:NOK) and other vendors working to stuff their respective storefronts with developers' digital goodies. In an interview with FierceMobileContent's Sue Marek, AT&T's Mark Collins said the operator is already seeing developers embrace HTML5, a technology he said will allow content and services to run on devices ranging from smartphones to tablets, regardless of the gadget's operating system. Specifically, AT&T plans to introduce a tool kit in March the carrier said will let developers "create apps that work on multiple operating systems instead of just one." And how will AT&T profit from such a move? "We will monetize it through carrier billing and other business models--like the Amazon model," said Collins, AT&T's vice president of consumer data. "Take it direct to consumer and also supply the infrastructure and open the network for other APIs and make money that way." Article
