AT&T revamps $25 GoPhone prepaid plan

AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) is upgrading its $25 GoPhone prepaid plan to include unlimited texting to Canada, Mexico and 100 other countries. This feature was previously only available on the $50 per month rate plan or on the $2 per day plans.

AT&T's GoPhone plans now include the following:

  • The $50 per month plan, which offers unlimited nationwide calling, texting and Web on eligible phones along with international texting to Canada, Mexico and 100 other countries.
  • The $25 per month plan, which offers 250 minutes of nationwide calling and unlimited international texting to Canada, Mexico and 100 other countries.

Customers can also select the $2 per day plan that lets them pay only on the days they use their phone, or they can choose a plan that charges a 10 cents per minute rate.

Mark Collins, senior vice president of AT&T's data and voice products, said that adding the unlimited texting gives customers more ways to connect with friends and family and still keep their budget in check.

AT&T has taken several steps over the past few months to spruce up its GoPhone prepaid service. In June AT&T debuted the $50 unlimited plan for talk, texting and Web access, though smartphone customers have to add data packages ranging from $5 to $25 on top of that. And in April AT&T partnered with LG to bring the Android-powered LG Thrive for $179.99 to the GoPhone brand, following other carriers that have brought Android phones to prepaid services.

AT&T's actions also come amid a slowdown in postpaid customer acquisitions among major wireless carriers. Many expect prepaid service to gain ground in the coming months and years as postpaid sales slow.
