Boost Mobile's Matt Carter says the $50 rate plan isn't causing a price war

Tools

On the Hot Seat with Boost Mobile President Matt Carter

When Boost Mobile recently launched a $50 per month unlimited wireless plan, some critics said the prepaid iDEN operator was starting a price war among wireless carriers. Boost, which is the prepaid arm of Sprint Nextel, typically catered to the urban youth market; however the Sprint division is changing that focus with this new unlimited plan. Boost Mobile President Matt Carter talked with FierceWireless editor in chief Sue Marek about the new $50 unlimited price plan and how his company is broadening their reach by going after customers that want an affordable and predictable wireless rate plan.

FierceWireless: Why do you think this $50 rate plan is attractive to consumers and who specifically are you trying to reach with it?

Carter: When we looked at the overall prepaid category, the challenges that we have seen to the economy we felt there was an opportunity for growth by offering consumers a much more value oriented plan. With prepaid, the shift has taken place with MetroPCS and Cricket to offer these value plans on an unlimited basis. Their unlimited plans are much more regional so we thought there was an opportunity given where growth was going in prepaid to provide a plan that brings unlimited calling minutes and text messaging. We felt that the target consumer would go beyond the traditional prepaid customer but also bringing in customers that were much more value conscious. This is a broadening of the prepaid market beyond its traditional customer segment that has traditionally been credit-challenged customers. And also we wanted to bring in customers that were looking for affordability and predictability with a wireless phone.

FierceWireless: Originally Boost was really targeted at the urban youth market. Isn't this rate plan taking it much broader than your original intent?

Carter: When we looked at prepaid, we did a good job of attracting youth and urban customers but the growth in prepaid extended beyond that marketplace. If we wanted to continue to grow and be a relevant player within prepaid we need to shift our demographic focus. We are still getting and want those customers that have historically been attracted to Boost but it's about bringing Boost to others.

FierceWireless: Are you concerned about capacity issues with this unlimited plan?

Carter: No we aren't concerned about that. Given our new positioning, the marketing efforts put forth attract customers from all over the country.  If we were targeting the same customers in the same concentrated geographies that we have historically been in you could make the case that there would be concerns about capacity. But our approach, and what we have seen so far, we are capturing customers from across our different markets so that puts less strain on capacity issues. We have no concerns about capacity issues. We will continue to monitor the stress points to our business, call centers, product inventory and network capacity--these are all things we have to do on a day-to-day basis.

FierceWireless: Do you think that you are inciting a price war with this plan?

Carter: No, not at all. There are others out there who will have a lower-advertised price point. We don't feel we are starting a price war but we are starting to make consumers rethink prepaid as a primary option to consider as opposed to a default option. We are not in the price war game.  We don't feel like we will be the lowest price or the highest price but the most affordable price for what you buy.

FierceWireless: We have now seen T-Mobile USA launch a $50 unlimited plan. It appears that you are impacting the Tier 1 carriers now.

Carter: Their plan seems more to me like a churn reduction effort for their existing customers. Their plan stacked against our plan is different. They give you $49.99 for just voice. We give you $50 for unlimited voice, text, walkie-talkie and Web access. This is an attempt for them to maintain what they have.

FierceWireless: Are you doing anything differently with distribution to get more customers on this plan?

Carter: Yes, we have national retail stores with RadioShack, Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Target. Those national retailers give us the opportunity to reach a broader segment of the marketplace and we complement that with our local and in-direct stores. We are in many thousands of locations. Our channel strategy is to be convenient so if consumers want to buy our product they can find it in these various locations. We are not just a MetroPCS or Cricket, because they rely on local indirects. We have a diversified retail strategy. We have local, indirect, national and Sprint retail stores and online.  That gives us a broad reach to this segment.

FierceWireless: Will you launch more devices or handsets to appeal to this broader potential market?

Carter: We just launched the Motorola Stature i9 device (click here for video demo). It's an amazing iDEN device. The form factor is unlike any iDEN device you have seen. It's very thin, compact and doesn't have the usual antenna that you see on these devices. We are broadening our portfolio. We have a Qwerty device coming out later this year and are working on several other handsets. When we launched the $50 unlimited plan we had five SKUs and now we are looking at having 7 to 8 SKUs by year-end.

Historically prepaid was looked upon as the poor man's choice. When you have a compelling plan like the $50 unlimited plan from Boost you will bring in a different segment of the population and they have a different expectation around handsets you should have.  We are increasing the appeal of the handsets.

FierceWireless: But to some extent you are limited. Other prepaid carriers can get handsets from multiple manufacturers. You have to have iDEN and Motorola. Doesn't that limit you?

Carter: I would say that's an opportunity. It allows us to work more collaboratively with Motorola. Other carriers have many manufacturers and that is a vendor/supplier relationship. Motorola is our partner and we are critical to their success and vice versa.  We can customize our handsets to appeal to this broader segment of the population. I don't view it as a limitation.

FierceWireless: Sprint has announced layoffs. Will this impact Boost?

Carter: No, not a bit.  A lot of companies are going through challenging times and trying to make sure they have the right cost structure in place to navigate these tough economic times. We have our heads down and we are trying to deliver profitable growth for the business. We are working to meet the expectations that Dan Hesse and the Sprint Board of Directors have placed on Boost.

We are pretty lean and mean now. The entire Boost organization has roughly 400 people in it.

Matt Carter for President!

I am a Boost dealer. I can only get one product to stock in my store. The low end $49.99 handset. Inventory has ALWAYS been a problem with Boost. I can't even get SIM cards for customer owned equipment. Boost will always be a niche player because of this. The Metro's and Cricket's handset portfolio is fluid. But, they at least have handsets in stock for their dealers to sell.

To the Boost Dealer. Diversify. I sell second hand handsets but buy Boost sim activation kits online through unofficial channels as well as phones. I don't believe a 10 percent profit margin on a $300 phone is very good business. I typically DOUBLE from wholesale to retail in price because I buy low and sell moderate. I also carry and sell handsets for Tmobile,Att/Cingular, Sprint, Verizon, Virgin Mobile and even Net10. I sell whatever moves. Boost is having major issues with texting and even voice calls. This is a HUGE problem. New customers will leave. The network has not been able to handle the rapid overload of new customers. Too much too soon. I personally use Boost myself, but am grandfathered into the original cdma Boost unlimited and except for slow voicemail, have no text/talk issues at all.

If Boost doesn't fix their outage issues, they will lose all they've gained. After all, the whole point of prepaid is no contracts and other players like Net10, Virgin Mobile, Cricket/Leap, Metro PCS would be more then happy to scoop up your business.

James Fisher from Sprint here. Regarding the prior respondent's comment about possible network issues, I want to reinforce something that Matt Carter emphasized in the interview itself. Here’s the bottom line about our networks and our service: both our CDMA and iDEN networks — the one on which Boost Mobile operates — are operating at their best-ever metrics now. Yes, in the past we have had challenges with our networks, but we have invested billions to bring them up to their best operating levels to meet the needs of our customers today. As we move forward with Boost Monthly Unlimited, which has proven to be incredibly popular, we know that it is essential that we not sacrifice network quality, and we have the ability to enhance capacity in specific markets where demand is high. We’ve come too far to allow anything to take us backward. Be assured, we are monitoring network usage very closely to ensure that Boost and Sprint customers using either network experience the best network quality we can provide.

James I am one of the new $50 Boost converts. I had the plan the day it started and up until about a week ago everything was great. Since last Thursday voice service has been horrible. Four days straight I couldn't make an outgoing call at all, it wasn't until Monday when the service began to improve. Even then sometimes I still have to try and make a call 4 or 5 times before it will go through. There are also major texting delays still happening. However I was willing to let that slide up until the voice problems started.

The worst part is the lack of communication from Boost to its customers over this issue.. Feel free to take a look at the official Boost Mobile facebook page to see some of the current customers comments.

I for one loved the service and loved the price, before last week. However if this situation can't be resolved soon I'll have no choice but to get another provider.

I congratulate you on an interesting interview with Mr. Carter. He seems like he is on the ball without the attitude exhibited by many corporate suits - although doubtful he wears suits. I publish an urban media newsletter in which we include hip & happening people leading our corporate world forward. I may consider an interveiw with Mr. Carter if he agrees. Do you know how/where I might find him to set-up?

I agree with the statement above about voice service/texting being horrible right now. Boost is definitely not on the ball with handset releases and that's the problem with being specifically tied to only Motorola. If they had several producers, they would have more phones and much quicker. Taking over a year to release a qwerty? Come on! Even Cricket has a qwerty and MetroPCS has a blackberry now! Yeah yeah, you released a $50 unlimited plan; but make a phone that would put it to good use. Candy bar and flip phones are 1998.

I am the one who posted about the horrible service earlier..

Thought I would say that it seems they are working on the issues because my service has been great for the past few days. No complaints here anymore as long as they keep it this way..

I wonder when you will interview Mr. Piilani from ZER01. They are launching an unlimited voice and data plan with international roaming at ZERO COST....for $80 a month. No fees or taxes no limitations. SMS + Voice + Web + Apps and when somebody calls and you are in Germany or Rome your phone will ring and you can call home without internatinal charges.

I'd say the start-up wars are heating up...we'll see what happens with the majors when they start shedding users.

Metro pcs is still on top in the unlimited "wars" if you want to call it that. I don't see them coming down anytime soon unless boost offers first month free and start offering some "family' plans at a discount like metro offers up to 4 phones just for $100 a month.

I am a Revol wireless convert. I love Boost compared to what I had with Revol. The phones are ok, but a Blackberry would be fantastic.

I was so excited to make the switch to Boost Mobile from Cricket and T-mobile. I purchased a boost mobile phone from Radio Shack on March 10th 2009. The i776 phone cost $99. and the first month unlimited service cost $50.

While purchasing the phone I requested my phone from another provider to be ported over to the new Boost i776 phone.

They started the process on porting over the phone on Wednesday and said my original number would be up and running in two hours, I
called them later that night to find out where my number was and they said it hadn't been requested so they put the request in again and the lady
said it would take up to 24 hours to get the number ported over.

During this time they said my text messages, the internet and picture texts, wouldn't work until my number was ported to the phone. Thursday

came around and I still had no access to the internet, text messages and pic messages and now I wasn't receiving phone calls from work or school. I called Boost Mobile again and

they said all the functions wouldnt work on the phone until the number was ported and another request for the port was placed.

Saturday came around and I called Boost again to customer service, and the request for the portal and finally got the phone number ported. The sales clerk went through some prompts in my phone and presto it was suppose to work... however

On Monday March 16th,2009 a co-worker of mine called and asked me why I hadn't returned his text messages on his invoices and I told him I

hadn't received any invoice in my text msgs. and he said he had been texting them to me for two days?! I spoke with Boost Mobile again on the phone

and they asked me what phone I purchased, I informed them it was the i776 Motorola phone, the customer care rep said they have had a lot of

problems with those phone and a lot of complaints on them and suggested I swap out the phone.
At 7:30pm I went back to Radio Shack and had the phone replaced. This time the phone volume didn't work on the phone the speaker phone doesnt work at all. The internet doesn't function at all and I am still not getting the text messages from a few select phones and picture text messages wont send at all. If you are working in the Staging business you know what I am talking about, I need the camera phone. The sales clerk said he would give me a refund and I accepted the refund until he said my refund was only $107.00. I told him no no no I paid $162.00 not $99. for the phone and fifty for the first month service. He said sorry cant refund your prepaid service of $50? I didnt even get to use the SERVICE and I dont get my money back>>?! He told me to call Boost and see if they would refund my money. The sales rep was very rude and wouldnt put a supervisor on the phone for me to speak with me but said he would refund the phone and ten dollars of my 50? Now I paid for a service and to this day have YET to receive the service they claim I would obtain with this phone... A whole week has gone by and I will not be stuck with this garbage trust me... I want my money back and a FULL REFUND and they can have their phone back and keep Fifteen dollars for the little usage I have used with the phone... The Texas care center is the worse center I have ever had to deal with. These people are rude on the phone and wont let you speak to anyone other then themselves... its ugly this company steals your money, offers terrible service and wont stand behind the products they sell you... something has got to be done and I know I am the woman to do just that...

Thank you

I was interested until reading this. Is the slob in the photo the founder?? He looks like he would be selling them out of his car. I will keep my Sprint account. I love the service and sharply dressed businessmen!

We got it here in southern California and the service seems good so far actually seems better then sprint nextel for there ugly over charged price. this is far more indeed better and cheaper.

I also just picked up the boost mobile 50 dollar unlimited plan after having metro pcs for a while and figured I would give it a try. I recieved the phone (i776) last friday and went home and realized 70% of the text messages I was recieving had no contact or number from where they came from. So I called Boost Mobile saturday night and the girl on the phone told me it sometimes takes 72hrs for everything to kick in. So while I was on the phone she had me turn off my phone to reset it whala it worked flawlessy. Then tonite (Wed) at work I was recieving calls and texts as normal and suddenly recieved a text and when I went to go into the inbox the phone's screen goes completely white then blue then shuts down and powers back up so I can't even read my inbound texts at all. So I have shut the phone off put it on the charger and I will check it in the morning to see if all is well with it if not I will be taking it back to get a new one I will keep you all posted.

Hello all, I am the guy with the comment directly above. Well I took the phone back to the store from wich I purchased it and the guy said we had to call motorola so I did. The experience was actually wonderful the girl on the phone from motorola was very polite and professional. She prompted me through a few screens that ultimately cured the problem with the inbound texts, very simple fix. I walked away happy and my phone is working completely now. The only true complaint I have about this Boost Mobile service is text messaging it is terribly slow and I can't stress that enough. So if you are an avid texter and you do it alot or even a little the texts come in slowly and go out slowly, for example tonight I recieved an inbound text from someone on my contact list opened the text to read it and it took 8 mins of waiting to actually see it appear. Mind you the text was only 5 words long nothing big. So not sure if it's Boost Mobile's network or what. Or if they have quite a few bugs to be worked out in there system. Too be honest it pisses me off! I have gotten texts all night long tonight mind you I work nights that were sent to me hours apon hours ago. Well folks I am truly 50/50 on this phone service I have truly never had a phone that had so many problems with either service or the hand set. Although the Motorola H710 Bluetooth I got to go with it works flawlessy crystal clear no feedback and nice and compact if your thinking of getting one I would definately consider getting this model. Well if I have anymore issues I will definately write again and at that point I will be taking the phone back for good and switching back to Metro PCS.

My wife just joined the boost mobile unlimited plan. We were impressed until she sent a text friend at 6:30pm her friend replied right away but my wife did not get it until 3:00am. That's over nine hours. Please fix this..

boost need a boost. They need to add a blackberry. I will be moving to Metro cause of the phone and service.

I am a value minded customer with a high need for unlimited voice. I live in an area (central PA) that T-mobile, Metro PCS, and other companies are not available. Here, Boost, always has a strong signal. During 60 mile commutes to Harrisburg PA and back I can talk the entire way down and back and maintain an acceptable signal strength. I do however experience a high quantity of dropped calls. Text messaging is very slow to send and recieve. Text delays are frequent, as well as texting not working (i.e. they never come to my phone!). The phones are worse than garbage. Even so, when factoring in unlimited for $50 and I get strong signal, I am still a happy customer. The #1 most important thing Boost needs to do is get an awesome updated handset comparable to the Eternity, Vue, Omnia, Instinct, etc.....

I switched over to Boost unlimited for my wife and I. We were always T-Mobile fans, and when they offered flex pay we were excited. However, T-Mobile has gone down hill. Way too many tech issues to talk about. But the worst happened about every two weeks. Our sim would fail and our service would shut off for no reason. T-Mobile would apologize and it would keep happening. We were done with T-Mobile. They are over priced and service isn't that good. We signed our numbers over to Boost and and in love with the cheap costs and unlimited everything. Our service has been better than T-mobile. I have been a faithful T-mobile customer since 2002, and spend on average $130 a month for our family plan, (which offers nothing special) Too many taxes, and too many problems.
I am proud to be a Boost Mobile customer now.
We bought our phones at WalMart... Target, Best buy, radio shack were all out of the cheaper phones. Even one of the Walmarts was out. We bought the $50 phones, which are simple but do the job good.

I switch both of our phones over from nextel to boost, and if i wanted i could just put the sim card from boost into my old nextel phone. We have not had any problumes with the service except when you call to put money on your phone somtimes they will say your credit card is no good and you will call the card company and they sat it is boost problume. so i had to run to town and buy the pre paid card to keep my phone going. No biggie though as now i know to get the cards while i am already in town. We were paying over 100 a month for nextel and it dint have unlimited anything, so we got boost (which usees nextel iden network) and works just the same as our ld plan at a fraction of the price!

The unlimited text feature of Boost is truly something of a lie. When you say "text messaging" people assume you mean it's instantly delivered to someone's phone. On Boost, text messages are delivered and received many minutes or hours or DAYS later. It's insane that they would allow this to continue. If you text a lot, Boost is not an option for you.

I have never been so dissatisfied as I am with boost mobile. I have Conjestive Heart Failure and had to use a neighbors phone to call an ambulance. Now how pathetic is that? I recently purchased not one not two but five of your phones, just so my family can stay in touch and save some money. But to my dismay the calls rarely go through on the first try, and the text messaging takes days to get. My wife and I were both on the phone with customer service representatives and were both cut off. Without a single call back, we have called the service center now today makes seven times and are getting cut off or nothing gets resolved. Someone really needs to seriously take a look at these situations and change the way that things are done. If there is any solution to this problem please contact us. I am not alone in this complaint. We are getting tired of all the runarounds! You should have known what you were doing before you posted such a great deal on your phones, espesially in this pathetic economy. Please rectify this situation soon!!!

In fairfield county CT many people cannot make outgoing calls or recieve outgoing calls. I think they have to many people because of this unlimited plan but not a strong enough network, the customer service is of no help what so ever. They give a different reason everytime and when I was connected to support they disconnected me. I was on my house phone so It was not my end. I would stay away from this company they dont care about the Pre paid customer

I am planning to buy a BoostMobile phone tomorrow but everything I am seeing and hearing about the service has me very nervous. I was prepaid with Unicel here in Vermont but AT&T bought them and canceled the Unicel prepaid, which cost $50 a month and was unlimited. My neighbor has Boost Unimited and his texts and even his emails come in hours or days late. That's lame but I don't have any options. If someone from Boost reads this: Please get it together! We are counting on you!

Well i used to have cricket and they were ok. I decided to go with boost because of the unlimited plan they have. I WAS happy that i was in the boost network, but now not anymore. Too much problems with boost. DROPPED calls and TOO much delays on the text! I mean we paid for the service that we are NOT getting at all. I'm very dissatisfy with the boost network. That plan that boost talks about alot, the 50 dollars plan, the popular plan, well if this continues, the so called popular will be UNPOPULAR. Come boost get on the BALL! VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!!!!!

Boost bobile has been one of the worst services I have ever dealt with! I was using them for business and my customers kept telling me to get rid of them, because I would have dropped calls 5 or 6 times and then I would go and try to auto redial and it would tell me the number was invalid please try your call again later. I spent 2 hours of my personal cell phone time for nothing and I spent more time trying to striaghten out the problems with the phone than I did business, plus I lost business. The customer service was even worse. I'm U.S.A.f (Ret.) and I am glad we don't run our military this way or we would be in trouble. Text took 2 to 3 minutes. If you are a person who likes to get anger and frustrated and treated crappie, then this is your company. This is my statement as a free American with the freedom of speech for which I defended.

Mr Carter, Mr Fisher:

If you think your product is so good why dont you support it? Your company tech support is the worst I have encountered in over 25 years in the mobile phone industry. I spent over 4 hours with Customer no service without once being able to connect to a technician on a problem that tech promised would be fixed three different times. Their game is it might take 72 hours to fix this but if not give us a call, knowing that getting through to support is a full time job.
I beleieve your target market is the lowest common denominator who cannot afford to complain. Yes 50 dollars unlimited is a great deal, but only if it is usable. Like they do in some restaurants.... it aint all you can eat, it is all you can get. I think I need to find out how many folks are similarly situated and see about maybe a class action.

Boost Mobile is a Sprint Company. Suprise!! This "Slob" does work for your company.

I purchased the i335 phone and Boost Mobile unlimited plan at my local Radio Shack on April 20th, primarily for the unlimited text, which I need to use frequently when at work. I also planned to use the phone for occasional long distance phone calls. After purchasing and activating my phone on-line and waiting for 3 days for the phone to activate with no success I called customer care (it should be called customer we don't care) they finally managed to activate my phone. After using it (or attempting to use it) for several days I found that text messaging is a joke. Incoming text often NEVER arrive, the text that do arrive average 47 minutes to several hours to arrive. Long distance service is terrible my calls are always dropped,.Yes calls are "unlimited" but it is extremely annoying to have to call someone 3 or 5 times in an attempt to complete a simple conversation.

I called customer care to complain about the text messaging and the long distance issues and was told they were well aware of both of the issues. I was told that they were sorry, in fact very sorry but the popularity of their unlimited plan had strained their network. The rep informed me that my complaint about texting had been a major issue for 2 months and that they were working on resolving that issue and hoped to have it fixed in May.

I don't think they should have been advertising unlimited text and pushing unlimited text when they knew it wasn't working properly for 2 months prior to my phone purchase. I was then told that the issue with long distance call dropping was an issue they'd began to note in "certain areas" and how sorry they are. I was told that it started as a small problem but that the problem seems to be expanding in "certain areas".

The rep then walked me through various setting resets before sending me a text, which took 6 minutes to arrive to me (only text I ever received in under 40 minutes), he then said my phone was fixed and that they hoped to improve their text service. He said that they had people working on that and I should see improvement in May.

After failing to receive text messages for the following 2 or 3 days, I had 3 friends text me test text, 2 of the text never arrived and the 3rd took 1 hour and 14 minutes to appear in my inbox. I called customer care again and was walked through another series of resets and once again told how very sorry they are and that they understand there is a problem and they know that it is frustrating..etc..

May arrived and texting was still not working in anything close to the expected fashion so I called customer care again to request a refund of the unused portion of my unlimited payment and was told they have a no refunds policy and how sorry they are that I am not happy with my service, they also always make sure to tell me the quick keypresses to use to Reboost my phone, which is very annoying when you are attempting to explain that your phone does not work for what you purchased it for. This time I asked to speak to a supervisor and was evidently transfered not to a supervisor but to another rep who listened to me for awhile and then told me she was not a supervisor. I was told there was no supervisor available,. I asked for the phone number for a supervisor and was told I could leave a message at the Boost website. I said I would stay on the line or call Customer Care back over and over until one could be located, suddenly there was a supervisor available. After explaining the issues to the supervisor I was told again how very sorry they were and that, yes there are text messaging issues and they are working to resolve them. Her excuse for the issues is that Boost had NO idea how popular their unlimited plan would be and that all of the new unlimited users are the reason there are issues. I was told I can not have any portion of my $50 refunded. They have a strict NO refund policy but I was "given" a $15 credit, which really only served to infuriated me. Great I have $15 to use on a phone that I can't use for phone calls or text. Wonderful, great customer care there! At this point all I want to do is to return my phone and get a refund. I don't want to use the phone, I DO NOT want to be a Boost customer.

I attempted to return the phone to Radio Shack and was told I can exchange it for a new same model phone. I generally spend several hundred dollars a year at my local Radio Shack, I will no longer be shopping there. Boost Mobile is still advertising their "wonderful" unlimited plan and signing up more people, so I imagine the problems will get worse and not better. I feel duped and ripped off by both Boost Mobile and by Radio Shack.

Last evening I tried (one last attempt) to use the phone for a long distance call, 10 minute conversation and 3 times I was dropped. I then had 2 friends send me text, neither of which has arrived after 15 hours. I sent myself a text and it arrived after 42 minutes. Today is May 16th and text and the long distance issues have obvioulsy not been resolved.

I would strongly suggest that at this time no one sign up for Boost Mobile Unlimited if you want, need or expect to use your phone for phone calls and/or text messaging.

I don't think my expectations were too high. I wasn't interested in bells and whistles, just wanted a cell phone on which I can make phone calls and send and receive text messages. Text messaging is supposed to be a quick form of communication. A cell service on which text never arrive or take longer than a few minutes to arrive is of no use to me at my job or at home. My initial $50 of unlimited service runs out on May 2oth. I will not be Reboosting.

I have purchased a new Virgin Mobile pay as you go phone. Virgin Mobile is the cell carrier I'd used for 2 years before switching to Boost and never had issues with phone calls or text messaging except for a delayed text on the day that Obama was inaugurated which was understandable. I hope that Virgin Mobiles new unlimited plan won't degrade their up to this point very solid and excellent service.

I wish my Boost Motorola i335 had a flashlight feature because at least then I'd have something minimally useful for my over $100 expenditure.

Boost mobile is so unrealiable they should pay me for the pain and suffering endured while attempting to use this service for past 2 months

Why cant we go on boostmobile. com anymore and view our call history. This is a concern to me because I lost alot of #'s through this terrible phone that I have that just went out on me and I had to replace.

Ugh! I have had boost for 5 years now...the prepaid
I just updated to Boost $50 unlimited last week.
It was AMAZING
Until this morning and ALL day...I have not received ANY texts.
Not one.
I sent out some and idk if they went through or not.
But I know I'm not getting any.

I purchased an i776 phone about 6 months go, 2 weeks in I started having minor issues with the outside screen going white, but a flip open and back shut would fix. Now my phone wont even stay booted if the "transmitters" are on. After about 10 seconds, the screen fades all white, and the phone will reboot itself..endless'ly, untill it finally shuts off the transmitters on its own.

I called boost to get my $50 back for the unlimited plan, because my phone died the same day I switched to unlimited plan.(coincidence?)
They told me no refunds ever, and if I didnt get another phone within 30 days, I would not be able to use any of the $50 unlimited plan I payed for...what a crock!
Yea I can send my phone back in, pay for the shipping, wait 2-3 weeks, and hopefully not get another lemon phone back...think Ill just buy used phone from a friend and never buy anything boost, or motorola again. Cell phones should last 20 years, not 6 months. I barely used it, nvr dropped once, Manufacter defect all the way.
I would have bought boost again once I got another phone, had they given me my refund.

Whats with the hardcore rap when you call in? The owner of Boost must be black AND Jewish..lmao

I am a Boost Dealer and have only one problem that is running out of phones really fast other than that I can get any phone I choose to get to sell.

I've been a Boost customer for over a year now; I'm not in the 'demographic areas' where Boost began, but someone who is looking for value.

I've been very happy with Boost most of the time, but I don't text often. When I do, however, I expect the text to go through in a reasonable amount of time, not days or not at all. I have yet to receive a text I sent to myself as a test over 3 months ago. This is absolutely ridiculous, and I see it is one of the biggest complaints of using Boost.

My Boost phone acts as my 'everything' phone, i.e., home, travel, office, so I really love the $50 unlimited cost. Yes, the phones could be more updated but at least mine works and has been reliable. The service has been reliable for calls, but again, the texting service definitely needs to be improved upon.

AT&T sucks

I had the same problem. They are telling me I have to send them my phone to fix, and will be without a phone. I am wondering what they did to fix yours? You didn't have to send it to them did you?

Boost moble text service has changed. They say it for the better but it's not for me..I have a nolder model phone from boost from 2002 and now some of the features and services so no work. I was told by a service agent I need to buy a new phone anyway... They do not even have the manual to my phone..She told me "don't be so cheap, upgrade my phone". Ok I am a cheap Bast...d but I do not need a customer service agent to be rude.

Don't buy Boost mobile's $50 plan. It is not $50.00 a month, it's actually $100 a month, because you are required to pay every 2 weeks instead of each month. If you do not pay every 2 weeks you are able to text, but your phone line is cut until you pay up. It's a joke.

I have been a boost mobile unlimited customer for about 2 years now. I was very, very happy with the service in the beginning. I started out with the original unlimited plan and it cost me $58.68 per month all together. The only problem I had was with the Motorola phone in which the buttons kept sticking and I'd have to turn the phone off and back on to fix it. Then I started having problems with my screen going going blank and it shutting itself on and off. After that the ringer stopped working, then no one could hear me and I'd have to use speaker phone all the time. The phone was only a few months old when this all started, and the phone was in perfect condition, hadn't been dropped or anything. Other than that I thought the service itself was great, the phone was a piece of crap. So, eventually I went and replaced my phone, my local store is a Radio Shack so I went back there to get a new phone, and my only options were expensive Motorola phones, so I had no choice and bought a newer model Motorola. Again, service was great, then I received an automated call from boost saying that they were adding unlimited web and walkie talkie to the unlimited plan and the price would drop from $58.68 to $51.61 (that's with tax and all) so I opted in. Well, I was kind of angry at first because I was asked some questions about my phone, which was only about 2 weeks old, and the Boost Mobile rep I was sent to when I opted in, tried to convince me that "I had to" buy a new phone with a walkie talkie. I refused, I had just bought this phone 2 weeks ago, before the walkie talkie phones came out and I couldn't get a refund. So, I flat out told the lady no, then she told me that I couldn't receive the new unlimited until I bought the walkie talkie phone, since the new plan had added that feature. I was highly upset and again refused telling her, that they had also added unlimited web in which I would be using along with talk and text, that I just wouldn't be needing walkie talkie for now and that I shouldn't be required to do so, especially since I had already been on the original unlimited plan to begin with and I would not be bullied into buying a new phone. I went on to tell her that I would be willing to go trade my new phone back for a walkie talkie phone and pay the $10 difference, that was a no go as well as just a plain refund.....made no sense to me, I stuck my ground and refused. Told her I guess I'd stick with my original plan, for which she then tried to tell me I could no longer receive because my phone was the older model. This set me off good that time, since the phone was purchased 2 weeks prior. Finally, I got off the phone with the woman (she wouldn't transfer me to a supervisor of course)because I could no longer have a civil conversation with her and my children were home at this point and I didn't want them to have to listen to me getting upset. So, I hung up with the idea put in my head that I apparently wouldn't have any service at all after my month was up, according to Ms. Customer Service rep of the year. Well, the next month I got the text that my payment was due. Called Boost to reboost with my credit card, and well, when it asked what amount I wanted to pay, instead of my normal $58.68 I punched in $52 (to be sure it covered taxes and all) just to see if it would work. It did, I received the new unlimited plan. The only thing that didn't work was the web, I called Boost and a very nice lady walked me through the steps to get it up and running and it was working within 5 minutes.

So, for several months the service was wonderful, everything worked great.....then the problems started. My buttons started sticking on my phone again. Then people started complaining that they had been calling and I wouldn't answer the phone, but I wasn't receiving these calls, no missed calls, no prompt of a new voicemail. Then people started telling me my mailbox was full. Though, I didn't have any voicemail I knew of, sure enough the box was full and had messages in it from months earlier! Then problems with the text, I wouldn't recieve them, people weren't getting mine, or they would come hours or days later. I called Boost Mobile and another rep tried to convince me to buy a new phone. I've had it with them trying to push new phones on me, especially when there are only 3 phones available at my local Radio Shack, the cheapest one that many of my friends have and the one I bought for my teenage son, is a piece of crap and they have nothing but complaints about them. It works great for my son, but he is only 13 and really doesn't use it often, only in emergencies and such. The middle priced phone which, is not that cheap, is what I already have....the one I was told I had to replace because it was an old model! The last and priciest one, is owned by a friend of mine and has more problems than the one I already have! This is ridiculous. Things have done nothing but gotten worse! Now, my Motorola phone is doing the same thing my last one did, buttons stick, the ringer has a mind of it's own and only works sometimes, sometimes I cannot even answer calls and now, as of yesterday, my screen is white. I cannot fix it, I tried reseting it many times to no avail. I can't read texts or see my contacts or any of that. Luckily, the small screen on the outside is still working and I can see who is calling, but that's it. And, since the screen went white I am having a harder time answering calls, I push the answer button and nothing. I also had been having alot of dropped calls. It is terribly disapointing to me that Boost Mobile, offers such a wonderful deal that would be worth the money if the phones and service kept up! Honestly, I am terribly dissatisfied with the Motorola phones and which Boost would find another phone to offer. Though, I am truly starting to wonder, since everyone is having the same problems, always with Boost and Motorola, I wouldn't doubt that Boost and Motorola set this up so that the stupid phone starts screwing up right around the time, they release a new phone. Because I have been told each time by Boost reps that "I had to purchase a the new phone to keep my service", which of course is not true. My dealer, the customer service guy at Radio Shack whom I see everytime I pay my bill, or need help with the stupid phone has been appalled to learn they are telling customers that. Though, apparently not all reps are doing that, just some. Anyways, I hate to keep rambling on and on, but I just wish Boost would clear all of these issues up and live up to their potential! The idea is great, unlimited everything for an affordable price. It would be nice if they would also treat their customers better! I don't want to be told I have to buy a new phone every few months and treated like a cheapskate when I don't. I am a single mother of 3 children, and though we live comfortably, I have more important things to spend my money on than a new piece of crap Motorola every few months! So Boost please fix these problems! Oh, and another thing, I went today to suck it up and buy the stupid walkie talkie phone (of course a Motorola) since my phone is obviously at the end of it's short life, and guess what? My friendly Radio Shack rep called Boost to start the process (luckily before I paid for the phone) and they informed him that I would not be able to keep my same phone number! Since those phones are on a different network, I had to get a new number. So, yet again, I'm stuck with this barely working phone because I don't want a new number, I've had this number for over 2 years now and I use it not only for friends and family, all my kids have it memorized including my 4 year old who just got it down! I use it also, for work and for school. It would be a HUGE inconvenience to change it! Boost's response to that? "We are sorry, if you want to fix the problems you are having you are going to have to suck it up, pay for a more expensive, better quality phone, accept a new number and deal with it" that is verbatim.....my friend at Radio Shack promptly hung up on the b****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my boyfriend's phone is presently unavailable and has been three days now and he told me that he paid the bill...i called him at first and i got the unavailable message, i called again and i got through to him, he said he was surprised i got through to him because he wasn't receiving any calls and he paid his bill. I hung up and tried calling him again and there it was unavailable again, and it is presently still unavailable...boost surely has no boost...ya'll need to improve your service, especially the text messaging. i would text my boyfriend and he would receive them after several hours or none at all.

hey you bunch of losers!! quit complaining about nothing. so you bought a little phone, it didn't work out, and you didn't get your little way. so waste how much time whining about it??? so you lost a penny or two, big deal. life is hard, huh? you think you're the only one having a bad day?

Dear James, for 3 hours today I have spoken to 4 complete morons at BOOTH. I am trying to transfer my prior cell phone # from US Cellular to my new Blackberry. No one can help with this task.
