Confirmed: Sprint chooses Nokia for WiMAX

Tools

We reported on the rumors earlier in the week, but now it's official: Sprint has added Nokia as one of its WiMAX networking equipment vendors. The carrier already announced Samsung and Motorola as vendors in mid-2006 for the $3 billion network buildout over the next two years. Nokia, Motorola and Samsung are also the three biggest handset makers in the world, which is good company to keep when planning to rollout a new networking technology. Handsets are the usual barriers to entry for consumers, but between the three of them a wide variety of phones should be made available. Alcatel-Lucent, Nortel, ZTE and Huawei were also in the running for Sprint's third WiMAX vendor.
