Democracy Wireless touts political agenda

Tools

Calling itself a "progressive cell phone company" Democracy Wireless is offering a new cell phone service that will donate 10 percent of all monthly charges to support the People for the American Way Foundation, a liberal political group that says it supports progressive values and social justice.

Democracy Wireless is an arm of Working Assets, a firm that resells credit cards, long-distance service and wireless service to customers and then donates a portion of its revenues to certain non-profit groups. Working Assets, which was formed in 1985, says it has donated more than $50 million to progressive causes.

The firm resells airtime on Sprint's network and many of the price plans mimic Sprint's pricing. For example, the firm offers rate plans with 200 minutes for $29.99 and 450 minutes for $39.99.

However, Democracy Wireless does have a few unique offerings. For example, the reseller offers "Free Speech" calls of up to 30 free minutes per month for customers that want to call the White House, Congress or other targeted decision-makers.
