Ericsson launches femtocell for GSM

Tools

Femtocells have become a relatively hot topic in the home networking circles, and Ericsson is ready to cash in on the buzz with the launch of its own femtocell solution. It claims its femtocell is the smallest GSM base station. For the femto-uninitiated, femtocells or picocells are tiny radio base stations that end users set-up in their home much like WiFi routers. These base stations provide better coverage for mobile users that also use their mobile phones while at home. Ericsson's femtocell product is compatible with GSM and W-CDMA phones and is compatible with WiFi and ADSL. Some believe femtocells will help mobile carriers compete with the rise of VoIP for landline phones as well as the growing trend of fixed-mobile convergence.
