Ericsson unveils 'Radio Dot' small cell to enhance indoor coverage

Alcatel-Lucent (NASDAQ: ALU) has its cube-shaped lightRadio network gear product, and now Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) has a dot-shaped one. Ericsson is announcing what it calls the Radio Dot System, a disk-shaped small cell that can fit in the palm of a person's hand and be placed on walls or ceilings to boost indoor voice and data coverage. Unlike Distributed Antenna Systems, which are generally aimed at large indoor areas such as stadiums, Ericsson is targeting the enterprise and small office market with the Dot system. Dots are connected via standard Internet LAN cables to indoor radio units that link to a base station. Ericsson said its Dot small cells offer many of the same features that the company offers in its macro base stations. Ericsson said the product is not expected to be commercially available until late 2014. Release
