EU greenlights phone use on planes

Tools

The European Commission has lifted the remaining barriers on mobile phone operators looking to offer mobile phone services to customers on flights. While the in-flight services are not yet generally available, no regulatory forces are keeping them from rolling out anymore.

"From today onwards Europe's sky is open for business by mobile phone operators," said European Commission spokesman Martin Selmayr. Selmayr went on to say that calls made while in-flight will be "a little more expensive" than regular mobile calls because the planes will need to deploy some networking equipment to safely and efficiently route the calls.
