EU seeks to end mandatory GSM for 900 MHz

The European Commission offered an initial proposal to do away with a 1987 rule that limits the use of low-cost radio frequencies between 900 MHz and 1800 MHz exclusively to GSM phones. If the proposal becomes law, carriers could use the cheap radio spectrum for services as such as voice, video and data streaming and broadband Internet access on any mobile device. The EU estimates that the proposal would cut costs by 40 percent for the industry. This move will have to be approved by regulators as well as by the European Parliament.
