FCC approves Verizon, RCC merger
The FCC today approved the $2.67 billion merger between Verizon Communications and Rural Cellular Corp. This move essentially locks up the merger since the Justice Department has already indicated it will approve the deal as long as Verizon gets rid of some of its spectrum in six markets.
The merger, which was announced in July 2007, allows Verizon to expand its footprint and save more than $1 billion in synergies in reduced roaming and OPEX expenses. RCC's customer base is 716,000 and it operates in about 15 states.

I'm not surprised the least bit with this development. Anything these two titans: AT&T and Verizon asks for - the FCC grants their every wish. Wait until the Verizon-Alltel merger. I don't know what the love affair with this governing body or (grant your every wish organization)and Verizon and AT&T is? You better put a lock and key on your wallet or purse. At the rate the FCC is going - You wont have any money left over to do anything. Because Verizon - known as the company of creative fees and AT&T a company that loves to offer its customers expensive plans. This body is the gift that keeps on giving to these two monopolistic conglomerates. Thanks for lessening choice for the American consumer. If any one knows - please sound off in this comment section.
Funny thing is WC, your cellular bill has probably gone down in the last 10 yrs, and service & features available to you have increased by leaps and bounds. Much of this is due to the consolidation of this industry which simply had too many players. ...and many of those "fees" that you are talking about are not fees, they are taxes... don't like 'em? don't vote Democrat. (...and dont vote for any RINOs either for that matter.) We are, however, fast reaching a point where further mergers of any size will be a thing of the past, but as long as effeciencies can be gained without losing true competition then I say let it continue.
Did you guys hear that? Further mergers of any size will be a thing of the past. I'm speechless How about you America? When they gobble up Sprint and Alltel and it's gone is that not losing true competition? Prices went down because of competition not less competition. Sure some consolidation caused this too. What I am trying to say is the bigger AT&T and Verizon get the more phoney baloney goes on in the billing department. They think our money is their money. This is the very reason why Ma Bell - AT&T was broken up. Now it is being put back together. Congress look at whats happening....
WC, after about a year,I suggest you ask RCC customers if their service was improved by Verizon.............We in FL know how Nextel customers feel about Sprint, that's why they are losing customers left and right!
Lolinfl - I didn't say that Sprint wasn't losing customers. All the carriers are losing customers. I am letting the public know that At&t and Verizon are getting too big. How much bigger do they need to be. Would you want them making your telecommunications decisions soley between these two? Speaking of RCC - They were an established carrier for those areas. If Verizon felt that those areas needed better service why didn't they build a network for them from the start? You probably don't have the answer for that nor do I have one. Was it convienient for Verizon or did it better their portfolio? Just because some thing or company thinks they are the best at maintaining or building something superior doesn't mean they have to conquer the entire market. I guess Verizon's customers pocket are going to improve service in a year for former RCC customers - because it definately wont come from their profits. Lolinfl - can bet his or her bank account on that one......So what is Verizon's excuse for buying Alltel? Is their service bad too? They seem to be doing good. What is their reason for being purchased? Lastly, Sprint is not the only one getting bad press these two along with some of the other carriers - post paid and pre paid are in the news too. You always have to have one scape goat and in my opinion its Sprint.
Remav is an idiot, for the don't vote Democrat remark, but as far as the wireless game the merger is great, and the Alltel merger will be even better, better coverage, better products and the price is not going to get any higher. Funny how Republicans blame every tax on someone else. Idiot
