FCC: Nation not running out of phone numbers
A report issued by the Federal Communications Commission this week found that 582 million of the nation's 1.3 billion available phone numbers are currently in use. As expected, wireless operators are using a higher proportion of the numbers, with 59.1 percent of the available numbers assigned to them. Perhaps more interesting is the impact number portability has had on phone number availability. The report said that 25 million wireless phone numbers have been moved to new carriers since 2003, when number portability was implemented, while 30 million wireline phone numbers have been moved.

How on earth could we be running out of phone numbers? Numbers are infinite. True, perhaps one day we'll have to move up to 11 digits or 12 digits or whatever, but seriously, I don't think we'll be running out of numbers anytime soon. Who knows, maybe one day we won't need phone numbers at all.
