FCC official stumps for public-safety broadband network

The FCC is moving ahead on many of the proposals laid out in its national broadband plan--including its ambitious plan to foster a nationwide, interoperable broadband network for first responders. Jamie Barnett, the chief of the FCC's Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau, told Computerworld that the the time is right to build the network, which will cost between $12 billion and $16 billion over the next 10 years. That expense could be partly financed by a monthly fee on all broadband users of around $1 per month. Article
