FCC shortens landline number porting to one day

Tools

The FCC voted to shorten to one day the period that landline companies have to port a customer's phone number from one company to another. The current standard is four days, but can often be longer if the switch happens before a weekend. Wireless companies have been advocating for a shortened period because they think it will help them get landline customers to switch to all-wireless service. Wireless operators contend that they can port numbers among themselves within hours. T-Mobile USA had lobbied hard for the change; the company offers a $10-per-month phone service through its Hotspot@Home offering. Article (sub. req.)
