Released a year ago, GungHo Online Entertainment's Puzzle & Dragons, a free-to-play hybrid puzzle/role-playing game, has become Japan's most lucrative mobile game ever. According to information included in GungHo's fiscal 2012 financial report, issued this past weekend and translated by consultant Serkan Toto, GungHo's January sales hit $92 million, up 1,022.4 percent from year-ago totals. Although the company didn't break out Puzzle & Dragons' contribution to its bottom line, indications are that the game grossed an average of $65 million last month, or more than $2 million per day. More impressively, it appears roughly 99 percent of Puzzle & Dragons revenues originate from inside the Japanese market. FierceMobileContent Editor Jason Ankeny tried out Puzzle & Dragons to see what all the fuss is about.
