'Full-duplex' wireless could double network throughput, and vendors are taking notice

Last week, researchers at Rice University in Houston announced a breakthrough in wireless technology called "full-duplex." In theory, it would allow mobile operators to double the throughput in their networks without adding any cellular towers by enabling devices to send and receive data at the same time and on the same frequency. Ashutosh Sabharwal, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rice and one of the lead researchers on the topic, spoke to FierceWireless about the technology, what it means for wireless carriers and how it might be incorporated into wireless standards.
