Garmin to launch Android handsets in 2009

Tools

Garmin will launch its long-awaited Nuvifone in Taiwan in second quarter of 2009 and plans on producing "self-developed" Android-based handsets next year as well.

Garmin's Asia Pacific marketing director Tony An told DigiTimes that not only would the Nuvifone launch in Taiwan, but that the company would be expanding its reach into the handset market by launching "self-developed" Android handsets. The production will be outsourced.

The Nuvifone has been on the radar for many months and received FCC approval last week. That phone is being tested on 1900 MHz and 850 MHz bands, but there is currently no word on whether it will be paired with a specific U.S. carrier.
