According to a report in The International Herald Tribune, Germany is proposing that EU countries limit their roaming fees to 49 euro cents a minute for outgoing calls and 25 euro cents a minute for incoming calls. The EU's telecom chief Viviane Reding has long championed such a cap on roaming fees, and many see Germany's support as a sign that Reding's plans may come to fruition soon. In July, the European Commission said it supported Reding's plan to cap roaming fees at 49 euro cents a minute for outgoing calls and 16.5 euro cents a minute for incoming calls, which were based on the assumption that carriers only pay 10 to 12 euro cents in actual costs to connect such calls. Industry members dispute those figures.
