Goodbye unlimited: VZW charges for data overages

Tools

Verizon Wireless announced its new mobile data plans earlier this week and its new "unlimited" data plan now has a hard stop at 5GB. Current users of the
$59.99-a-month unlimited data plan at Verizon Wireless might get a stern warning letter if they use more than 5GB of data during a month or have their throughput reduced to 200 kbps. The rules have changed for the new $59.99 plan, however, since the carrier will now charge 49 cents for every MB of data used past 5GB a month. The carrier is also offering a $39.99 plan that includes 50MB of data per month, and users who exceed the limit have to pay an additional 99 cents per MB. The new plans take effect on March 2nd.

How could this policy possibly suck any worse? Is there a utility provided to monitor usage? Of course there won't be.... Verizon would be MUCH wiser to fix the bugs in the VZW code than to go down this rediculous road. I am contacting my telecommunications people today to cancel all Verizon cellular wireless accounts and switch to Sprint, which is almost 500 accounts on my campus alone.

Sprint has been saying for the last year that Verizon's "unlimited" data offer wasn't really. Same for their "unlimited" voice plans. Too bad Sprint has had such problems in the past, their data network rocks. I think Anonymous above has the right idea. Time to switch providers, at least Sprint will bend over backwards since they're trying to capture new customers.

A networking giant who seems to have kept their marketing team away from the finance group so that a great idea is implemented with no internal business justification prior to announcement. The end result of this action by me is "why bother".

Better get a card before the new plan goes into affect. Sprint coverage pales compared to VZW.

Oh, you can check you bytes used on the VZW my account page.

Hi,

it is sad to read this kind of news about mobile data policies in the USA... With this kind of approach the operators will newe manage to get people to use mobile Internet.
In Finland (Europe) I pay 14.9 EUR (approximately 22.5 USD) per month for an unlimited 512 kB mobile data service that has no limit in the amount of data and if I would like to have 2MB connection, it would cost me 29.8 EUR per month. And when I use WLAN & FRING, I do not have to pay for my calls...

Do you really live in the country of free enterprise? I doubt when I read the stories about your operators and their policies. It fees that US subscribers are slaves of the telcos... REBEL!

VZW customers can view live data usage with the access software program that comes with the vzw data card.

Many providers do add limits to access. Verizon has done it for a while now. There are very few people that ever hit that cap. The difference is not they are publishing it. There are many third party bandwidth usage tools on the net for free. I have hughesnet satelite internet and they do the same thing.

verizon wireless sucks

this is a message to all the pc air cards with the old "unlimited" plan, my name is tony and i am filling a class action law suit against verizon wireless pertaining to this so called unlimited usage plan and anyone wanting info can reach me at tonythedrain_clnr@yahoo.com. thank you for reading

I signed up for verizon's wireless card in Sept.of 2008. I had asked REPEATEDLY if the card was unlimited access prior to getting the wireless card. The salespeople told me that it was UNLIMITED! I needed it because I travel to the mountains and live in area where the only internet access I could only get was this broadband card or use Hughesnet. Since I already had verizon phones, I chose Verizon as an UNLIMITED plan. The company let me use as unlimited until January/February when I had gone over the limit when I got a subscription to RealTV. I was told that Verizon lets you use it unlimited for a few months, then starts limiting access. BAIT AND SWITCH!!! I was in shock! I am looking for a class action lawsuit - I would like out of this contract! I homeschool, correspond with clients and use this for personal use. I cannot afford to go over and I can't afford two internet services to compensate! Anyone in Florida pursuing a class-action??

I had sprint and got screwed with no service ,no help. I went back to cingular ,which is now at&t and will never switch again with lies and false promises.
