Google: No plans to join LiMo

Even though Google's Android operating system and the Linux Mobile Foundation, or LiMo, have similar foundations and goals, Google said yesterday that it is not planning to join the growing number of firms that are backing LiMo. Earlier this week, LiMo said that it had added 11 new member companies and that there are 21 mobile devices running on LiMo's operating system.

During a panel presentation at Linux World conference, Eric Chu, group marketing manager with Google's Android group, said, "Unification for the sake of unification is not the path we decided to go down." Chu added that Google is currently testing its Android software for release under the Apache free-software and open source license later this year. The core operating system is 80 percent complete, he said.
