HTC's Chou takes up new post at visual effects firm Digital Domain

Former HTC CEO Peter Chou is staying with the struggling smartphone maker but is also taking on another role: executive director at Hong Kong-based digital effects company Digital Domain, according to a securities filing with the Hong Kong stock exchange. Not much is known about his new role other than that Chou will serve on the company's executive committee and Digital Domain's board "believes he will contribute his valuable insights in the Group's business development, and bring satisfactory benefits to the stakeholders." Digital Domain is the visual effects company behind Iron Man 3Furious 7Transformers and Tron Legacy, among other movies.

In March Chou stepped down as CEO of HTC to lead HTC's "Future Development Lab," where he has been focused on future product development and growth opportunities for the firm. One of those is virtual reality, although the widespread commercial launch HTC's Vive VR headset has been delayed from later this year until the first quarter of 2016. As The Verge notes, Digital Domain has been working on VR projects and recently formed a partnership with Immersive Media called IM360, which led to projects like the presentation of Conan O'Brien's show in VR at ComicCon. A partnership between HTC and Digital Domain on VR content could be in the offing but likely won't happen for a while. Article
