India set to overtake U.S. as number 2
According to a report from India's regulatory body the Telecom Regulatory Authority announced that India will become the second largest mobile phone market after China. The U.S. currently holds the position as the market with the second largest number of subscribers. India counted 250.9 million wireless users at the end of February, while the U.S. counted 260.5 million users at that time. China counted 540.5 million users. Despite China's monstrous figure, India has it beat in terms of growth: India added about 8.53 million new subscribers during February, while the U.S. added 2 million new users.

I made this prediction that India would be the second largest market after China in 2004 for the first time. People in the industry were not listening, then I made this same assessment in 2005, 2006 at the CTIA Smart Phones Summit both years as I presented on China and India's mobile device markets, finally in 2008, many industry analysts are paying some attention. Western companies intent on selling hardware and software solutions globally need to wake up a bit and focus their attention away from domestic USA market development for a nanosecond to see that China and India, what I call Chindia, will be the leading markets to sell into for many years to come.
