Inside Verizon's Super Switch - a wireless brain

verizon super switchVerizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) was kind enough to give a group of reporters a tour of a "Super Switch" facility near Orlando, Fla., during the 2011 CTIA Wireless conference. The five-year-old facility, which spans 43,000 square feet, is called a Super Switch because of its ability to withstand a Category 5 hurricane. The hardened structure serves as the brains of the carrier's Central Florida network and is one of five Super Switches across the state. The facility has numerous redundant systems and was built to be able to keep the network up and running in the event of a natural disaster. Slideshow
