Intel joins with Korean firm on wide area WLAN

KT, South Korea's largest fixed-line operator, is joining with Intel to develop wireless broadband technologies. The partnership between the two companies will join WiBro, a homegrown portable Internet technology designed to provide wider coverage than wireless LAN services, with WiMax. Korean government officials believe WiBro has the potential to become a strong complement to the 3G wireless networks and over 18,000 WLAN hotspots installed nationwide. The South Korea Communication Ministry predicts 9.5 million WiBro users by 2012.
