Intel partners with Verizon, universities to research next-gen wireless technology

Intel said it has partnered with Verizon (NYSE:VZ) and several research universities to explore technologies for next-generation wireless networks. According to Intel, the work will focus on topics including how to improve quality of service via context awareness, wireless device power efficiency and enabling new wireless spectrum. The work is being done under the auspices of Intel Labs, which recently formed the Intel Strategic Research Alliance (ISRA).

Although no standards have been set internationally for so-called "5G" wireless networks, which are not expected to become commercially available until at least 2020, Intel is working to get its chips into more mobile devices with an eye toward future advancements. Intel said it is investing at least $3 million to support wireless research at more than 10 universities, including the University of Southern California, New York University, Princeton, Stanford, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Texas at Austin, University Fabra Pompeu, Purdue University, Cornell, IIT Delhi, University of California at Los Angeles, Rice University and Macquarie University. Post
