International LTE roaming may take time

Wireless carriers are ramping up their LTE plans this year, with major deployments expected from Verizon Wireless, MetroPCS, NTT DoCoMo and others. However, international LTE roaming likely is a long way off, simply because operators are pushing LTE into a variety of different spectrum bands. Verizon is working in the 700 MHz band for LTE, DoCoMo is in 2.1 GHz and TeliaSonera is operating in the 2.6 GHz band. This variance in airwaves, coupled with device makers' need to support legacy 3G systems (which also cross different bands), could mean that it will be a while before LTE devices can roam across different countries.
