iPhone downside: short battery life, dropped calls

A recent spate of news reports indicates that not all iPhone 3G customers are happy with their experience. Although the phone has been lauded for its faster Internet speeds and its downloadable apps, some consumers say that the device's battery consumption is too high as is the rate of dropped calls.
AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel says that Apple and AT&T are working to ensure users have a great experience with the iPhone 3G and the device has not been a tremendous source of complaints.
Michael Gartenberg, an analyst with JupiterResearch, says that the iPhone 3G's struggles are due to its popularity. A large number of new users can degrade the wireless service and 3G access, and downloadable applications can cause users to run down their batteries faster than they would on other phones.

I strongly disagree with the analyst from Jupiter. The struggles are not due to its popularity. In Europe we have been having 3G for a long time and most phones work without problem. I have my 4th differnt at the moment. In Sweden you can hear the same complaints about Iphone - and thats in a mature 3G network. The antenna is simply not good enough and Apple has still to learn from Nokia and Sony Ericsson how to make phones that lasts. Apple may get there eventually, right now they are barely in their teens.

iPhone 3G drops calls. Period point blank.
Even more so now with the latest software update. I get dropped calls atleast 5 - 6 times per day....sometimes 4 or 5 times back to back with "strong" signal.
My Razr 2 simply never did this. ( I own both )
While there is no feature comparison, a phone should be good at making PHONE CALLS RIGHT ?
I'm getting a little upset, and considering returning the product.

Although I have an original iPhone, I discovered that the new 2.0 version of Apple's software upgrade eliminates the "Pick Your Plan" (Monthly billing without a contract) option offer only on the original iPhone. Of course Apple blamed AT&T (regarding AT&T not realzing that this 2.0 upgrade was not just for the 3G version of the iPhone) and AT&T blaming Apple insisting that in order to re-activate the standard iPhone you have to go to the iTunes Store which does no provide a "Pick Your Plan" option.
Bottom line: I had to spend $30.00 to an outside repair shop to downgrade to the original (prior) iPhone version (before the upgrade). The issues you are having seem to be par for the course--I hope Apple & AT&T gets the act together soon.
