ITC agrees to investigate Nokia phones

Tools

The same government regulator that barred imports of phones made with Qualcomm's chips is set to investigate phone made by Nokia, thanks to a request by InterDigital. The International Trade Commission (ITC) will investigate Nokia's 3G handsets, which InterDigital claims infringes on two of its patents. Specifically, InterDigital alleges that Nokia's new N75 device infringes on the patents, but Nokia and the company have been unable to negotiate licensing terms, according to InterDigital. Nokia recently asked the ITC to investigate whether Qualcomm's chips infringe on its patents, too. Banning imports is one of the only ways the ITC can enforce its rulings.

This is something so typically American government, first creating wars to generate work on the continent. And now finally realizing it is losing it, they start to ban rest of the world products. And of course, first the ones that are overtaking the US market. Motorola losing it because of crappy phones and Nokia obviously winning it with their savvy handsets and user interfaces. Lets strive for Fair Play!

Jorn,

While it's true the ITC is a government agency, it did not choose to investigate Nokia on its own volition. The investigation began at the request of InterDigital, a company based in King of Prussia, PA.
