iTunes glitch mars 3G iPhone launch

Tools

Problems with Apple's iTunes activation server has wreaked havoc on the first day of Apple's much-anticipated iPhone 3G debut. The Apple iTunes server apparently couldn't handle the demand from new users signing up for service and shut down.

As a result, AT&T stores are telling iPhone buyers to go home and sync with iTunes later in the day.  Customers who buy an iPhone still need to sign up for a plan at an AT&T store. But to actually use the device, it has to be activated through iTunes.  As of mid-afternoon Friday, new iPhone buyers were still reporting problems connecting to iTunes for activation.

Not a good first impression... Not sure why they had to rush this important event and then botch it. Is it due to the competition ?

I'm using my 3g now but it has associated someone else's email address for iTunes ... The activation process was a nightmare.

The Apple/ATT Bait and Switch tactic was generally overlooked by the press and could have accounted for additional sales. Since the 3G announcement Apple has been blasting emails almost daily regarding the 3G availability and the buzz was "twice the memory - half the price...$199 and $299. Not true. That was the price for current iPhone/smart phone users, and new ATT users - that never appeared in any Apple ad. ATT customers that were not currently smart phone users had to pay $399 for the 8 Gig and $499 for the 16. Apple retail stores claimed in was in the 'fine print' in the brochures but never clarified the exception in any ads - and the retail store response blamed the decision on AT&T and AT&T Customer Service claim it was Apple's decision. Nothing like penalizing your current customers! Apple is practiced in that area, AT&T is learning fast. Trust Verizon will be the beneficiary for the non-smart phone AT&T user group.
