LightSquared settles long-running Garmin dispute

LightSquared settled its long-running legal tussle with Garmin, putting an end to the company's disputes with various providers of GPS-based services. The company last week announced similar settlements with Deere & Co. and Trimble Navigation.

LightSquared launched in 2010 with hopes of building a wholesale nationwide LTE network that would essentially serve as a white-label infrastructure for other service providers. But the L-band frequencies it hoped to use interfered with GPS transmissions, and the company was forced into bankruptcy after the FCC revoked its conditional license to operate.

While the Garmin settlement clears the final hurdle with the GPS industry, it's still unclear whether LightSquared will ever build its network. "We are glad to finally find resolution to these important spectrum issues and are pleased to reach an end to the case against Garmin" CEO Doug Smith said in prepared remarks. Release
