Wireless carriers and vendors worldwide have come together to develop the next generation of mobile broadband, particularly Long Term Evolution/System Architecture Evolution (LTE/SAE) specifications that will support average data speeds of 100Mbps. The group is coalescing around The LTE/SAE Trial Initiative this month, and it aims to show that their spec, based on 3GPP requirements, will outperform both Release 6 of HSPA as well as wireline DSL. The group will commence the trials this month and they will continue for a period of 18 to 24 months. The technology will commercially launch in 2009 or 2010.

LTE/SAE networks will supposedly enable lower operating costs for carriers while providing higher data rates, lower latency end user services and an improved user experience. The radio systems required make use of new transmission schemes and advanced multi-antenna technologies running over carrier bandwidth ranging between 1.25 MHz to 20 MHz.
