Metric: 79% of U.S. annoyed by idea of mobile ads

The very idea of it annoys them: According to a recent Forrester Research report, 79 percent of U.S. consumers are annoyed at the idea of mobile marketing. Honestly, the phrasing of this executive summary annoys me. Of course the idea of more advertising annoys consumers. Still, the metric points to a need for mobile marketers to "adopt a mindset where value replaces interruption and campaigns are designed for an abbreviated and immediate mobile experience." Or, make it as painless as possible.

This contrarian view comes during a week where both Verizon Wireless and Cingular Wireless (AT&T Wireless?) have announced plans to launch mobile ads on their decks in the coming months.

I have been a customer of my present cellular company for more than 10 years. I am waiting to see which cellular company announces that they will NOT permit, allow or sponsor unsolicited mobile ads on my cell phone. They will be my new carrier.

Finally a proper, intelligent response about this ridiculous Forrester report, the question Forrester never asked is how many subscribers would rather pay for access to content or receive it in the traditional ad supported format. Ask yourself how many media formats are provided without ads? TV, news paper, magazine, online, Fierce, Moconews.net all have advertising and now that you’ve gone through this exercise tell me how much content would cost if you had to pay for it…the answer is you can’t afford it. My opinion is if Forrester wanted to provide a one sided report they did a great job of it.

The problem with mobile ads is that they are not packaged properly. I know a way to deliver ads in an effective manner that would be widely accepted. Anybody interested in the answer to wireless advertising e-mail me at joshmmm@hotmail.com . I know how to make it work I just don't know who to talk to about it.
