MetroPCS expands service to the Jersey Shore

MetroPCS is expanding its wireless service in the greater Philadelphia area to include the South Jersey Shore, further evidence of the regional carrier's encroachment onto the East Coast.

The new service will begin May 22 and includes Cumberland, Atlantic and Cape May counties. The flat-rate carrier launched service in Philadelphia in July, and broadened its reach to New York and Boston in February.

The carrier had its best quarter ever in terms of net subscriber additions in the first quarter. MetroPCS reported a 20 percent increase in revenue in the first quarter, to $795 million, up from $622 million in the year-ago quarter. The carrier also had a record 684,000 net subscriber additions.

The successes may translate into action on the M&A front; MetroPCS also said it was considering acquiring smaller wireless firms.
