MetroPCS takes on Boost, debuts BlackBerry

MetroPCS introduced new flat-rate plans to coincide with its launch of Research In Motion's BlackBerry Curve 8330, the first smartphone in the flat-rate carrier's lineup. This move puts MetroPCS in direct competition with Boost Mobile's own $50 unlimited plan.

MetroPCS' $50 plan will give customers unlimited talk, text, web browsing, MMS and BlackBerry email access. MetroPCS also said that for an additional $10 per month enterprise customers can get the same features on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

MetroPCS had been hinting it was going to introduce a RIM phone soon, though the launch is sooner than expected. Last week, in an interview with the blog GigaOM, MetroPCS COO Tom Keys said the carrier would launch a handset from a "Canadian smartphone maker" in the second or third quarter of 2009.

The phone will be available at Best Buy stores and select MetroPCS outlets in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Detroit, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento beginning this week. The phone will sell for $449.

Boost Mobile President Matt Carter said the prepaid carrier would be debuting a Qwerty device later this year. Boost currently is offering a $50 per month plan for unlimited voice, texting, walkie-talkie and web browsing. Click here to read our interview with Boost's Carter.

I have metro pcs and just got the new boost unlimited plan. Metro's phones are more expensive and also have a lot of lemons in there phones. I know of atleast 10 people personaly whose phone screen just died or will only vibrate and no longer ring.
Boost I was happy to use to have the "chirp" back since metros chat link is more like a calling feature then a true ptt. The only thing is that the new boost unlimited does not offer the first month free but the $50 is just $50 no taxes or anything added on.
Metro offers family plans though. If boost would offer the first month free and some discounts for having more then one phone on an account then it would be almost equal.
If you just need a phone to text, call and you don't travel that much then metro is for you.

If you like the walkie talkie feature and don't really care about having a lot of phone choices then boost is for you. ( you can always put your sim in a nextel phone)

I think people still sleep on Metro. It is always said that is you don't travel much, Metro is for you. But I have noticed that Metro now covers most of the major cities across the U.S. at no additional cost. They also have about 15 different phones to choose from starting at $49 bucks...that's like 5 times as many phones Boost has to offer. Oh and people forget that there is no roaming with a Boost handset because once you are off of their network, their phone can not be used at all.

Boost Mobile is still way better than MetroPCS. Unlimited does not mean "unlimited" with MetroPCS as they charge you 0.19 a minute for travelling. That is a hidden fee. All Boost needs to do is offer Blackberry service and they will be perfect. Forget MetroPCS!

MetroPCS is the bomb! The .19/minute is no longer the case, do your research mashwar77. I truly believe they are chanign the wireless space and Tier1 are going to have to change some things in order to compete.

I've had a Boost $50 unlimited plan, but thought I would try Metro's unlimited Blackberry. Well, Boost has a problem. The Blackberry works perfectly. No dropped calls, web, text, e-mail and ALL the Blackberry features work perfectly, and so far the coverage area of the Metro is better than the Sprint network. Once people figure out that the Metro plan is as good as it is, then the other carriers are going to have a REAL problem. The gouging and monopolistic pricing is over.

i would like to sell metro pcs service in Atlanta, Do i need to buy a franchise?

A lot of the Anonymous comment's on this page sound as if they are coming straight from the mouth of a Metro PCS Salesman! I have Metro, I am in L.A. and I have dropped calls everyday. Not one day passes that this doesn't happen. The service is not good. The phones are over priced and old school. The coolest phone, the Blackberry is almost $500!!! And all that money for a 1X speed network.. And the coverage in no way compares to Sprint or any other national provider. I live in Los Angeles, a Metro area with very strong coverage according to the coverage map they provide and it just plain sucks..

I also have boost.. i used to live in Florida in 2004 while i was overthere i uncle service with metro pcs and i remember him saying this company is sucks, etc.. miss call, lost signal. when i heard that metro was coming to NYC i thought possible changes were made to provide better service by metro. my sister was happy that for $ 50.00 she can get everything so she join with metro. guess what still the same after one month she just cancel with them.. metro has some old fashion phones and make with cheap material. this is no good. boost has ugly phone but their services is huge better than metro, you get miss call but no twice daily as metro.. i will recomended Boost for everyone... boost even save my life, saving more money calling internationally with their unlimeted international walkie talkie.

Guess it depends where you call since Boost only has unlimited walkie talkie to 3 or 4 countries. DR is NOT one of them. With my Metro phone I call everyday as long as I want(and work and errands permit) to my girlfriend. Yeah, phones were not that hot in the beggining, but I like the LG I just picked up and no contract works for me. Might not for others. I had a problem with a Boost phone and all I could do is mail it to Motorola... and in the meantime? Exactly, no phone! With Metro I could trade it in for 10 bucks.
