Microsoft announced last week it would increase investments in digital rights management (DRM) to guard against piracy and support the wireless industry as more tunes, pictures and video clips are sent over the airwaves to mobile phones; but is there more to the announcement? A comment from the company suggests that Microsoft's DRM may be one of 13 proposals being evaluated by the GSM Association, which is searching for an alternative to the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) solution. The GSMA isn't happy with the OMA solution, and it is looking for a proprietary OMA-compatible solution that will be licensed on fair and reasonable terms. The GSMA is supposed to make an announcement on the topic at the next GSMA meeting.
