Motorola's spin-off plans lead to layoffs

According to a report on ChannelWeb, in the wake of spinning out its handset business, Motorola has laid off about 350 engineers, some of whom worked on research and development for mobile devices. The layoffs affected employees at Motorola's engineering facility in Plantation, Florida. Motorola confirmed the layoffs but did not confirm any specific number.

"Motorola confirms that as part of its strategic review of business operations, which includes a previously announced $500 million cost-reduction initiative, the company has implemented workforce reductions aimed at making financial resources available for strategic business investment, while better aligning operational costs and expenses with business growth," a Motorola spokesperson said.
